the screen gallery
The Chinese employed screens in a decorative fashion whilst in the Japanese
home they functioned as room partitions.
Screens came to Europe by way of travelling merchants in the early 19th
century. Not only were they beautiful, but wonderfully effective in preventing
draughts in the Victorian home.
Screens are now used to divide space, with folding screens giving ultimate
flexibility; a cosy area within a loft apartment; a relaxed dining space
away from a busy kitchen; an intimate area within a public space.
Screens can be funky, minimal, organic or quirky; fabric, metal, painted
or wood; any shape or size.
